Manchester Science Park LogoThe new Consul General of China in Manchester visited the city’s Science Park this month to meet with Chinese companies who have successfully developed businesses in the UK.

Ni Jian, who took up the post of Consul General in September, visited both MIDAS (Manchester’s Inward Investment Agency) and Manchester Science Parks (msp) to learn about SinoVentures in the UK, a pioneering initiative aimed at strengthening trade links between Manchester and China.

During his visit Mr Ni heard that 17 companies from Greater China had opened their UK enterprise with SinoVentures since the scheme began in March 2005, including five companies from Manchester’s twin city of Wuhan.

Mr Ni also got a chance to meet face-to-face at msp with representatives of ProteinTech Europe, Nanxi Group UK and Macro Will Plastic Engineering (UK), three Chinese companies which have benefited from SinoVentures support.

Impressed with the companies he met, the Consul General pointed out that SinoVentures was more than just a business opportunity; it was helping to build links of friendship between countries.

Jane Davies, CEO of Manchester Science Parks, welcomed Mr Ni to the Manchester International Innovation Centre (MIIC) at msp, where SinoVentures is based, and praised the partnership approach of the scheme.

She commented: “SinoVentures is an excellent example of the public:private partnership working, at which Manchester excels.

“A joint initiative between the City Council, MIDAS and msp, with funding from the NWDA, SinoVentures has a track record of attracting inward investment and building global partnerships.

“The combination of msp’s accommodation and business support services with MIDAS’s expertise in supporting foreign investors provides overseas companies with a great start to their new UK venture.”
