Sir Robin Saxby, Chairman of ARM Holdings PLC, Officially Opens The Aimes Centre in Liverpool.
28 July 2005 |
AIMES (Advanced Internet Methods and Emergent Systems), a research and technology transfer centre of the University of Liverpool, is leading the deployment of advanced internet technologies, and in particular grid computing, which will ensure that businesses in the region are at the forefront of computing capability.
In the two years since its inception AIMES has made a significant contribution to the local economy assisting over 60 businesses with advice on the benefits of advanced technologies and facilitating the creation and safeguarding of over 75 jobs. In addition to this the Centre has successfully spun out five new start-up businesses. This excellent progress is forecast to continue with increasing numbers of Merseyside and North West businesses working with the Centre to improve performance.
The AIMES Centre develops business models which allow storage- and processing-intensive computing tasks to be handled with relative ease through the use of next generation technologies, including grid computing. Efficiency savings are made possible through the analysis of computational problems that were previously too expensive to investigate.
AIMES works with local companies to provide access to grid technologies on a computing-on-demand model, eliminating the need for businesses to invest in expensive hardware whilst at the same time benefiting from AIMES’ grid expertise. A ‘utility computing’ model means that companies will only pay for the computing power consumed.
In addition to developing new business models for the application of grid technology, AIMES creates new business ventures capable of delivering these services. AIMES also provides support and advice for these new businesses spinning-out of the Centre and works alongside the new ventures to facilitate interaction with the venture capital and business support community.
Prof. Dennis Kehoe, Director of AIMES said: "Since its inception the AIMES Centre has grown to become a thriving focus for next generation ICT businesses in the region and beyond. The quality of the AIMES staff and the excellent facilities have made a significant contribution to the successful launch of the Centre and in realising our potential for turning technology and technologists into businesses and entrepreneurs."
Sir Robin Saxby, Chairman of ARM Holdings PLC and graduate of the University of Liverpool, said: "Wealth Creation from our knowledge and science base is critical to the UK’s future prosperity. I am especially pleased that the University with which I have such close affinity is excelling both in technology and entrepreneurism."
